>> brian flores is at the rockridge station to explain how this all unfolded. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon. pretty scary and stressful situation for the b.a.r.t. passengers on board. from what we understand, 11 of the passengers were evaluated by the oakland fire department and nine were transported to area hospitals for conditions of stress and respiratory

problems. b.a.r.t. passengers aboard a passenger baypoint train described what it was like to be stuck in a tunnel with brake smoke coming into the cabin. >> it was nerve wracking. everybody is trying to stay calm or help each other, talk to each other or get through it. >> it was a hard stop. people got jostled. there was a lot of smoke. it was gray, not black but a lot of smoke. people were having really a hard time breathing and then the power went out just for a couple of seconds. >> reporter: at about 8:15, the b.a.r.t. train headed to sfo, made the hard stop in the berkeley hills tunnel. b.a.r.t. says the train created brake dust which stopped it completely, stranding passengers for what seemed like hours. >> we didn't know what happened and didn't understand the serious problem. we were stuck in the tunnel for the longest time in my life. >> reporter: passengers say the visible smoke came from the

last few cars. patients were taken to hospitals for various conditions, including respiratory problems. >> we had one person that was semiconscious on the train that we managed to get off. >> in our car, the whole train was visibly full of smoke. you could see it in the car in front as well. i think its it was brake smoke. >> reporter: oakland fire confirms there was no fire on board. just a little bit of smoke. this took about two hours and both trains were running at 10:30. 600, 700 passengers were on board the strain. a b.a.r.t. engineer was able to board it, fix it and the train transported those passengers here to rockridge. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. b.a.r.t. will spend most of the day trying to figure out what went wrong. but the big concern was getting the trains back on schedule. >> there's a tremendous backup

on the pittsburgh baypoint line. trains often five minutes apart have been sitting for hours. it will take a long time to recover. we're encouraging others to find alternative means. >> trains are back up and running on the pittsburg line but there are still some residual delays. john fowler talked to people at the orinda station who were stuck and frustrated. >> reporter: er to ri the orinda -- tori, the orinda b.a.r.t. station was ground zero for frustration for the commute. for about 90 minutes, upset b.a.r.t. patrons were milling about the orinda b.a.r.t. station. these pictures from chopper 2, westbound riders said they were ordered off the train, told there was smoke in the tunnel ahead. some said there was a few anxious moments. a little panic, then confusion. and people flustered in the parking lot here, some making

telephone calls. but people getting angrier and angrier by the minute. >> i was supposed to be at school at 10:00. just waiting. everybody is waiting. it's upset. >> there's always something going on with b.a.r.t. this is nothing new to me, so -- >> reporter: some riders complained they were not getting any good information. ironically, b.a.r.t.'s spokesperson was also trapped in the orinda station. she was on her way to work. she tried to calm frayed nerves. finally at 10:10, the first train left orinda and then two hours after the tunnel incident trains resumed service but delayed leeching many commuters more disillusioned and disappointed with b.a.r.t. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and ktvu's tara moriarty talked to several impacted b.a.r.t. riders and joins us live from the macarthur station. >> reporter: you know, we spoke

to an attendant who was at the rockridge station earlier and he had mentioned as far as the emergency response to what had happened, it just went off like clock work. but what happened afterward according to passengers was sketchy. they weren't able to catch buses. we went to the walnut creek station earlier to see how the commute was impacted there. >> i couldn't tell you that. >> an hour? >> i couldn't tell you how long the delay will be. please just go upstairs and get on the train. >> they are gonna start -- >> they are starting to -- >> thank you. >> reporter: the first train since the brake incident didn't arrive in walnut creek until just before 10:30. that's about an hour and a half wait for anybody who needed a catch a train. one woman told us that she was lucky she had only been waiting for 20 minutes. her patience was wearing thin. i'm frustrated. it can't get to berkeley which is where i needed to go. i have a meeting at 11:00.

it seems like every time i have to take b.a.r.t., there's something going on. traffic was snarled. some folks tried to catch a bus. >> i would have worked from home had i known. but now i'm stuck in here and i'm not close enough to home. >> reporter: one passenger told ktvu he was forced to take a $30 cab ride. he was not happy about that. all in all, everything is back to normal but a lot of frayed nerves. a lot of people say their confidence in b.a.r.t. is a little shaken today. live from oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> for continue congress coverage, head to our website -- continuing coverage, head to our website, ktvu.com. that's where you can watch the news conference and hear interviews from passengers above the smoking train. the sun is out. but overnight temperatures dipped lower than we've seen for a while.

the forecast for napa tomorrow, 19. oakland would tie a record. livermore would not. 23 is the forecasted low. the record is 21 and san jose would tie 29. the record is 29, 1972. maybe some low snow levels as well. i will have more on that coming up. sounds good. thank you. police in milpitas have released surveillance video showing what may be a possible kidnapping. they are not sure and that's why they are hoping the footage will help their investigation. ktvu's janine de la vega shows us the footage and talks to a witness who saw the struggle. >> reporter: you can hear this woman screaming for help at this bus stop on east calaveras boulevard. she's struggling to get away from a man. this was captured from an a.c. transit bus at 6:00 last night. a woman who works in the business park nearby heard the commotion. >> i heard a scream and i saw a

man pushing a woman. >> it looked like he was grabbing her and she was struggling. i thought it was a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting everything. >> reporter: the bus driver also witnessed the incident. the it's difficult to determine whether the two new each other. >> they are struggling over a bag or some sort of backpack. the female asked for help. yells out to say call the police. and the male intervenes and directs her off, they go back in the business park. >> reporter: police are treating this as a possible kidnapping. they sent out a chp helicopter to search the business park and nearby creek last night. but they found nothing. this morning officers went back to the complex to look for more surveillance video that may have exist and to see if there were no more witnesses. >> it could be a domestic situation. it could be boyfriend and girlfriend. it could be many things. we just don't know. we have to treat it the way we are treating it. >> reporter: police are looking to see if anyone was reported missing here. they are following up on leads

and would like anyone with information to come forward. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. the coroner is talking about the death of actor paul walker and his friend. what we're learning about just how quickly they died. and help is underway for a confused pod of whales. what marine experts are doing to help them get out of harm's way.

a rescue effort is underway in florida to save a pod of pilot whales off the coast of everglades, national park. marin experts say the pod of whales appear confused. they say the pod is swimming in shallow water. about ten of the whales have actually beached themselves. six of those beached whales were pushed back in a deeper water but several others could not be saved. now a team of marine biologists is trying to steer the pod back out to the ocean. new details about the death of "fast and furious" star paul walker. he and roger rodas died in a fiery car crash in santa clarita on saturday. the coroner says walker died of a combination of traumatic

injuries and burns and rodas died of traumatic injuries. both men died within seconds of the crash and that dental records show that rodas was the diver. human error could be the blame for last sunday's deadly train derailment in new york. a union says the engineer, william rockefeller, admitted to losing focus and was in a daze seconds before the crash. the train derailed after hitting a curve at 80 miles an hour. four people were killed and dozens were injured. >> it was a shock to him. you know, he was stunned. he went to try to correct it as fast as he could. >> investigators have eliminated mechanical failure as a cause and are focusing on the crew who have tested negative for alcohol. this morning nearly all rail service resumed on the busy north hudson line for the first time since the derailment. a man suspected of killing a person over a video game

system is due in court this afternoon. ronnie collins is accused of the fatal shooting of this man, 22-year-old ikenna uwakah on sunday in the bayview district. the victim posed an -- posted an ad for a playstation for $600. he was a student at san how cau college and was hole for the thanksgiving holiday. a decision by sonoma county supervisors will add lapel cameras to the sheriff deputies. this is in response to the officer-involved killing of andy lopez. the teen was carrying a bb gun that looked like an assault rifle when the deputy opened fire. lopez's death has prompted several protests and a call to press charges against the deputy. it's now day three of a search for san jose pilot dale smith and family members in the idaho wilderness. today, about 60 people are involved with the search that includes two helicopters and

five planes. smith was flying from oregon to montana when he reported engine trouble. he's the co-founder of a company called serial tech. his business partner says his coworkers are anxiously waiting for word on the search. >> it's been a couple of days now. the longer this goes on, the more worrisome it gets. we're still hopeful. we're still hopeful. >> searchers detected a faint signal from the plane's transponder yesterday. but they haven't been able to pinpoint the exact location. a san jose investigation continues into the death of a bicyclist who was hit by a car last night. it happened around 7:00 on vista park drive and branham lane. the man died after being rushed to the hospital. the driver of the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. the incident is san jose's 25th fatality of the year involving a pedestrian or bicyclist. an early-morning house fire destroyed a san jose mobile home and neighbors tell us this

is the fourth fire in recent months at the complex. the fire started around 2:00 a.m. at the casa mobile home park along monterey road. you are looking at pictures taken by the first responders. flame and smoke could be scene from highway 101 -- seen from highway 101. crews kept the fire from spreading to nearby units. neighbors are concerned about a recent spike of fires. >> this is the third one right down the street from us this past year. i mean, this is just shocking to me. >> neighbors say two of the fires were electrical in nature. the other was a palm tree fire lit by a cigarette. investigators have not drled the cause of the -- determined the cause of the fire this morning. george shirakawa is due in court today. last month he was sentenced for a year in jail for misusing money. this afternoon, he faces an

additional felony account in which he's accused of sending illegal mailers to discredit a candidate when she ran for city council in 2010. a new report shows low enrollment at the city college of san francisco. according to the examiner, full- time enrollment for the spring semester is down 26% from last year. a spokesperson said the lack of a printed schedule is the major factor but there's also uncertainty over decisions to pull the college's accreditation next year. students say shutting it down would be a huge blow. >> many lower income and disenfranchised people wouldn't have an education. they give second chances even to people like me. i'm an ex-felon. they have programs set up. >> the commission in charge of junior college is voted to termy nat the accreditation because it was not in

morning and tahoe was 2. a few clouds pop up. look at -- popping up. look at everything carving it. the system moves in on friday and that could give us snow. the cold air is in place. it's chilly, it's sunny. you may chilly, it's freezing out there. that's fine. upper 40s for some. low 50s for others. and these 50s won't last very long. we only have a couple of more hours left and the temperature will drop like it has a rock tied to it. you may not even crack upper 40s tomorrow. it will be very cold. 26 this morning in gilroy. probably about 22 tomorrow. and i think even a lot of records will be set tomorrow morning. then we'll focus on the attention on increases clouds friday night into saturday. it looks like a one-shot deal. it may bring not only rain but snow, very low levels. it's coming in in the evening and going into saturday morning. a lot of fun in the weather

stocks are lower on wall street as investors are concerned about the chances for

continued stimulus from the federal reserve. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 34. the nasdaq down 1. s&p down 3. home prices are in the east bay are way up this year. the website realtor.com calls oakland the number one turnaround town. that's because the median sales price for a home skyrocketed 56% to an average of $450,000. prices in pittsburgh are up 54% to $270,000 and homes in oakley have an average selling price of $303,000 up 38%. it could be a landmark case over google glasses as a southern california woman heads to court to fight a distracted driving ticket. back in october, the woman was pulled over for speeding on a san diego freeway. once the officer realized she was wearing the high-tech glasses, she was also cited for distracted driving. but the woman claims her google glasses were not turned on. google glass will not be -- glasses will not be in store
